Went to a roller derby yesterday... and it was totally awesome. It felt so full of positive female energy and fun.
The ladies all have fabulous pseudonyms like Re-Animate-Her, Hard Cora, Sake Bomb, Sheeza Brickhouse, Juliet Bravo, and Georgia O'Grief. The ladies represented every conceivable body type and they were all sexy - but in a way that screams self-ownership rather than objectification. And golly polly, are they hard core. These ladies take a beating and just keep skating. And then, when the games are done they all hug and name the MVP of the opposing team - giving them a trophy. The camaraderie and sportswomanship was so evident. IT was just GREAT. Nick and Laura loved it too. So. Much. Fun.
There were tons of little girls in the audience and I have to say, I can't wait to bring my kids to these games all dress up for their favorite Derby team - like Grave Danger or the Derby Liberation Front.
